In line with our vision of connecting every Ghanaian to knowledge resources,the Ghana Library Authority has signed a partnership with Commonwealth of Learning (CoL) to roll out online learning for skills acquisition in Ghana.
A strategy to help individuals who have lost their jobs due to the effects of the covid-19 pandemic to upgrade themselves or learn new skills.
Commonwealth of Learning is the world’s only inter-governmental organization and solely concerned with:
- The promotion and development of distance education.
- The promotion and development of open learning.
Apart from Ghana, there are other countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, Barbados, Canada, India, Bahamas, Sri Lanka etc who would be benefiting from this projects. A total of 52 commonwealth countries would also be benefiting from this project.
The courses will be offered on the digital learning platform called Coursera. The objective of the programme is:
- To help individuals who need immediate skills to regain employment.
- To help individuals who have lost their jobs or are on the verge of losing their job learn new skills and upgrade themselves.
- To help improve on individuals' income through acquiring new skill sets.
- To help individuals start their own businesses.

Coursera is an online education provider that offers online courses, popularly known as MOOCs or Massive Open Online Courses, from top universities around the world. Coursera has also started partnering with companies like IBM, Google, and PwC — these companies are also launching courses on Coursera.
3. What is Udemy?
Udemy is an online learning platform with more than 100,000 video courses. Some courses are free, but all are relatively inexpensive. Students receive guidance from an experienced instructor and have lifetime access to any course. Courses are available in 65 languages. Topics include business, finance, development, information technology, design, music and fitness.

Targeted groups for this project include:
- Unemployed citizens in search of skills.
- Informal and formal sector employees on the verge of loosing their jobs and wish to upgrade themselves or acquire new skills.
- Individuals in search of immediate skills to improve on their living standards.
- Individuals who lost their jobs due to the covid-19 pandemic.
8. Does my application guarantee enrolment?
No. Enrollment would be based on ‘first come first served.’ Only shortlisted applicants would be contacted.
9. Where will the training take place?
All learning will take place online.
10. Can I read more than one course?
Yes, but we advice you complete one module at a time and after that you can move to the next module.
11. Will certificates be awarded at the end of the programme?
Yes, certificates would be awarded after each course.
12. Is this open to just Ghanaians? Can foreigners living in Ghana apply?
No. The scholarship opportunity is opened to just Ghanaian nationals resident in Ghana.
13. Do I have to pay?
Enrolling a course on Coursera through Ghana Library Authority is fully paid for by the Commonwealth of Learning. However, you are responsible for your internet expenses to access the course online.
